It’s no secret that Apple has flirted with the smart ring arena for several years, as evidenced by multiple patent approvals and rumors from various sources.
We shared a Korean report back in 2024 that claimed Apple was accelerating its development of a smart ring that would compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Ring. The ring would be worn on a user’s finger to track health biometrics, claims the report.
Apple also was applying for patents related to an NFC-enabled finger-worn device around that time.
“It seems likely that commercialization is imminent,” said an industry insider that was quoted in the 2024 report.
While Apple Ring rumors have tapered off over the last few years, Kosutami’s rumor post indicates Apple’s interest in a smart ring may have been rekindled. Unfortunately, the leaker didn’t provide any details about the possible move by Apple.
The Oura Ring recently entered its fifth generation, offering a much smaller ring, plus new health monitoring capabilities, like blood pressure trend detection, nighttime breathing analysis, and tools for tracking the popular GLP-1 medications. The original Oura Ring was released in 2015, and collected activity about the wearer’s activity, heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep data, which it then transmitted via Bluetooth to the Oura app on an iPhone or Android device.
