Expected OLED iPad Demand Sees Samsung Prioritizing Development of OLED Displays

A report today by The Elec says Samsung has changed its priority in the development of its OLED display panels designated for use in upcoming iPad models.

The South Korean company is planning to postpone investments into full-cut, vertical deposition method it had been co-developing for over a year with Japan’s Ulvac.

Samsung Display will instead start investments into half-cut, horizontal deposition method it has been developing Canon Tokki, sources said.

This is because the latter method has already been commercialized and is being developed with the aim to supply OLED panels for tablets to Apple. Cupertino is planning to launch iPads with OLED panels.

Prioritization of this display type means the South Korean tech giant will focus less on developing full-cut OLED displays, which use just a single OLED layer, says The Elec.

Samsung is Apple’s main display supplier and has been supplying the company with OLED displays for high-end iPhone models since 2017.

Apple is expected to release the first OLED iPad Pro in 2024 in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, according to the reliable display analyst Ross Young.
