The TikTok app is once again working in the United States. (The app notes that operations have been restored “as a result of President Trump’s efforts.”) However, you’ll have to wait to re-install the app if you deleted it, as Apple is still not allowing users to download and install the app from the App Store.
TikTok was taken offline at 10:30 p.m. ET in the United States on Saturday as a federal ban took effect. Apple then removed the app from its App Store.
In an interview on Saturday with NBC News, Trump indicated that he would “most likely” give TikTok a 90-day extension:
“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said in the phone interview. “If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday said that he “will issue an executive order on Monday” that allows for more time before the U.S. law banning TikTok is enforced. Trump said the order will “also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order.”
Based on Trump’s remarks, would likely be in good shape if it restored the availability of the TikTok app in the U.S. App Store. Apple is apparently playing its cards close to its chest, playing it safe until the situation unfolds a bit more.
In a support document published today, Apple said it is “obligated to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates.”
“Pursuant to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries — including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others — will no longer be available for download or updates on the App Store for users in the United States starting January 19, 2025,” wrote Apple.
