High-end speaker manufacturer Sonos once considered making a MagSafe-compatible speaker that would attach directly to an iPhone, reports The Verge.
Engineers at the company prototyped a tiny, iPhone-compatible speaker that would attach directly to the handset via MagSafe, playing audio over a Bluetooth connection. The Verge says the prototype speaker was square in shape, looking similar to Apple’s now-discontinued MagSafe Battery Pack, but thicker.
Some employees pushed the speaker, as they believed it would be popular with Gen Z, and expected it to deliver good sound despite the compact size of the speaker. However, Sonos scrapped the project, due to “technical limitations, questionable appeal, and a limited target market.”
Sonos has been working to expand its product lineup in recent years, introducing the Sonos Ace headphones last year. The company is rumored to be working on a set-top streaming device, similar to the Apple TV.
