Yes, You Can Play ‘Doom’ on Almost Anything, Even a Lightning to HDMI Adapter

I’ve heard it said that classic first-person shooter Doom can be run on almost anything, even a potato. While that may not be exactly true, it can apparently be run on Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter cable.

In a video posted on February 2 and first shared by MacRumors, developer nyan_satan showed off his port of the classic first-person shooter video game Doom running on Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter.

While most display adapters wouldn’t have any computing power, that’s not true for the Lightning to HDMI adapter, as it boasts a dedicated system-on-chip with a processor, running a stripped-down version of iOS, which was intended to only process video signals.

For the twelve people out there that are not familiar with Doom, it’s a first-person shooter game developed and published by id Software in 1993. Players assume the role of a space marine who must fight evil hordes on the moons of Mars, with the final stage taking place in Hell.

This is certainly not the first time someone has gotten Doom to run on an unusual device or accessory. Developers seem to take it as a personal challenge to get the game to run on oddball hardware and accessories. So far, the game has been run on refrigerators, in the Google Search bar, and even inside of a PDF document.
