New iPad and iPad Air Don’t Use Apple’s C1 Modem for 5G Connectivity

New iPad and iPad Air Don’t Use Apple’s C1 Modem for 5G Connectivity

Apple debuted new iPads this week, unveiling new iPad Air and entry-level iPad models. As is traditional, both tablets are available with 5G connectivity in addition to WiFi ability. But, which model do the new iPads use? Do they use Apple’s new in-house C1 modem used in the iPhone 16e, which debuted last month?

Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber today says the answer is “no,” as he spoke with an Apple representative who confirmed that the new iPad Air and entry-level iPad models are not equipped with the C1 modem. Plus, MacRumors has viewed FCC documents that show that cellular models of both new iPads are equipped with a Qualcomm modem.

Apple may be holding off moving other mobile devices or even their MacBook lineup to the C1 modem until it has plenty of data from iPhone 16e users out in the wild to ensure the new modem can handle prime time.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said he expects the much-rumored “iPhone 17 Air” model expected for September will also be equipped with the C1 modem.

Apple has plenty of time to get the bugs out of its in-house 5G modem, as its modem supply contract with Qualcomm runs through March 2027. Apple is reportedly already working on its next-generation modems, the C2 and C3.
