In February, we reported that Sonos was working on a high-end streaming set-top box that would launch sometime in 2025. Now The Verge reports the company has now canceled work on the Apple TV competitor.
The company held a meeting earlier today, where it notified its employees of the cancelation of the project. All employees that were working on the project have all been assigned to work on other projects.
The device, dubbed “Pinewood,” had been planned to sell for a rather expensive price, ranging from $200 to $400. The device was reportedly almost ready for production and had been in beta testing for months. Despite the company having spent considerable resources on the project, interim CEO Tom Conrad has decided against the company releasing a device in the video category.
The device was said to be a simple black box that sported a “beautiful” Android interface that offered content from popular streaming services, such as Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix.
The streaming box was also designed to double as an HDMI switch, allowing users to plug in gaming consoles, other set-top boxes, soundbars, and more. The device is said to have fixes a known latency issue, preventing audio sync delays when using a TV with Sonos-branded soundbars. The box would also allow users to configure a surround sound system for use with Sonos speakers. It also had WiFi 7 and gigabit ethernet support.
