Google on Tuesday previewed Android 16, its next-generation version of Android. The new software will offer a range of new features, including Live Updates, a feature that mirrors Live Activity on the iPhone.
Live Updates feature allows users to track progress notifications from select apps, much like Live Activity does on the iPhone. Google says that Live Updates will work with top delivery, ride share, and navigation apps.
Google gave an example that after placing an Uber Eats order, users will see a glanceable Live Update to track their order’s delivery progress. These real-time updates will be available from top delivery, rideshare and navigation apps, and appear front and center so they won’t be missed. Android users will see Live Updates on the lock screen and home screen, and can tap into a menu bar option to get more information.
Android 16 will offer a revamped interface that focuses on color, movement, and haptics. Google is also adding a Find Hub that is similar to Apple’s Find My app, allowing users to track people, items, and devices. The new hub will even work with airline for recovering lost luggage, just like Apple’s Find My.
Google will also be adding an Advanced Protection mode, similar to Apple’s Lockdown Mode, which offers additional protection against malware and other threats for politicians, journalists, and activist.
Google will unveil more new features in Android 16 at next week’s Google I/O event.
