Apple is working to expand Apple Vision Pro gaming controller support in visionOS 26. The company has plans to provide native support for not only console controllers like those used by Xbox and PlayStation controllers but also spatial controllers, like those used by Sony’s PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers, reports 9to5Mac.
visionOS has offered game controller support since version 1.0, although developers have not widely adopted it. Currently, visionOS games that require a controller are assigned a “controller required” badge in the App Store.
Apple is looking to improve controller support this time around, alerting Vision Pro users when they install a gaming title that requires MFi, or gaming console controllers. Users will also be alerted when a title specifically requires motion-aware Spatial Controllers, to provide 3D interaction in the title.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said Apple and Sony have confabbed and discussed launching support for the Sony PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers on the Vision Pro. Sony has been working for month to make it so. Apple has also contacted third-party developers, in an attempt to convince them to support these controllers in their Vision Pro game.
While we know Apple has been working on added gaming controller support for the Vision Pro, we don’t know whether or not Apple will announce the news at WWDC25 next week or will delay announcing it until later this year.
