Apple’s Brad Pitt vehicle “F1: The Movie” passed the $500 million mark worldwide over the weekend. At the time of this writing, the worldwide box office gross for the film is $509,651,907.
“F1” joins “Superman” in passing the $500 million mark in worldwide box office this weekend. “Superman,” which premiered nearly two weeks later then “F1,” saw its worldwide revenue hit $502,701,578 (at the time of this article.)
F1 has achieved the highest gross ticket sales of any of Apple’s theatrical releases, surpassing Apple’s previous cinematic efforts in terms of box office income.
Ridley Scott’s epic Napoleon movie generated $221M during its theatrical run, while Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon tallied $158 million during its run.
The “F1” box office numbers means the film is Brad Pitt’s second-most successful film, only behind “World War Z.” Before F1, Pitt’s most successful movies were:
- World War Z: $540,455,876
- Troy: $497,409,852
- Mr and Mrs Smith: $487,287,646
- Ocean’s Eleven: $450,717,150
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: $377,426,903
Apple hasn’t announced the official budget for the film, although several in the industry believe that “F1’s” production budget ranged anywhere from $200 million to $300 million. Apple has to share that with exhibitors, and distribution and marketing costs for the movie are believe to be around $50 million. This all means that “F1” will need to make at least $635 million to show a profit.
Since Apple owns the film, it’s make another good bit of income from the film’s on-demand release, followed by availability on Apple TV+, where it could attract additional subscribers to the streaming service.
