TikTok to Launch New U.S.-Only Version of App in September

TikTok will launch a new U.S.-only version of its app in U.S. app stores on September 5. The move is part of the company’s ongoing effort to comply with federal regulations that require the sale of its American operations, reports The Information.

The currently available version of TikTok, which carries an internal codename of “M,” will be removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on the 5th and a newly available version dubbed “M2” will be made available.

U.S. TikTok users will then need to update to the new version to use the service from March 2026 and beyond. The current version of the app will cease to work after that date.

Since Apple does not allow developers to create region-specific versions of its apps under a si gle app listing, TikTok will be required to create a new “M2” bundle identifier as a new App Store entry. All user data will reportedly be transferred to U.S.-based infrastructure as part of the switch.

Congress passed regulations mandating that Chinese parent company ByteDance either sell its U.S. TikTok business or face a nationwide ban of the app.
