A new report from Bloomberg lays out Apple’s plans to use artificial intelligence to expand into home security, smart displays, and robotics. The report says Apple is working on a system of smart home security products to compete with Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest lineup of products.
In December 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was developing a home doorbell that would support Face ID. Apparently, the Cupertino company’s plans extend way beyond that.
Bloomberg today reports that Apple is developing a home security camera that is battery-powered and the device “could last from several months to a year on a single charge.”
The device has facial recognition and infrared sensors to determine who is in a room. Apple believes users will place cameras throughout their home to help with automation. That could mean turning lights off when someone leaves a room or automatically playing music liked by a particular family member.
The report also says that Apple plans to “develop multiple types of cameras and home-security products as part of an entirely new hardware and software lineup,” designed to directly compete with Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest ecosystems.
The report didn’t specify any timeframe for the debut of these products.
Bloomberg also notes that a tabletop robot that will serves as a virtual companion, is still targeted for 2027, and will serve as the centerpiece of the AI strategy. Meanwhile, a smart speaker with a display is slated to arrive next year.
