Apple Planning to Offer In-Store iPad Repairs for the First Time, Says Report

Apple is getting ready to offer in-store iPad repairs for the first time, according to a report from French site iGeneration.

The report claims that by the end of this year, Apple plans to have approximately 30 Apple Stores ready to carry select iPad repairs performed by on-site technicians. The stores will mostly be located in the United States.

Currently, customers with iPad hardware issues that bring them to Apple Stores are offered a replacement for the device, with a quote at the maximum out-of-warranty price. The broken iPad is then sent to a repair center, where it is usually refurbished. While the final invoice for the replacement iPad is usually lower than the out-of-warrant quote, an accurate quote is not provided during the customer’s initial Genius Bar appointment.

Apple is now reportedly looking to revamp its iPad repair system beginning in September, when it will begin providing exact quotes, as it already does for Mac and iPhone repairs.

Apple in May announced that it was expanding its Self Service Repair program to cover the iPad lineup for the first time. The program provide iPad owners with access to repair manuals, genuine Apple parts, Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions, tools, and rental toolkits. The program supports iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16), the program features components for several repairs, including displays, batteries, cameras, and external charging ports.

Apple in April 2022 launched its Self Service Repair program, originally just for iPhones and Macs, providing repair kits, repair manuals, and components to customers. Apple also offers repair programs for independent repair shops, including the Apple Authorized Service Provider option and the Independent Repair Provider program.

Repair‌ now supports 65 Apple devices, including the iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio. Apple is planning to expand the program to Canada this summer, becoming the 34th country to offer it.
