The Apple-produced Brad Pitt starring vehicle “F1: The Movie” began racing onto the Apple TV app starting Thursday, and it is now confirmed to be available for purchase or rent in select countries, including the United States, South Korea, and Japan. The film is expected to be available through the Apple TV+ streaming service later down the line.
“F1: The Movie” launched in theaters on June 27, and the racing film has been Apple’s biggest theater hit ever, so far taking in $595,357,445 at the time of this article.
“F1” has achieved the highest gross ticket sales of any of Apple’s theatrical releases, surpassing Apple’s previous cinematic efforts in terms of box office income. Ridley Scott’s epic Napoleon movie generated $221M during its theatrical run, while Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon tallied $158 million during its run.
Apple hasn’t announced the official budget for the film, although several in the industry believe that “F1’s” production budget ranged anywhere from $200 million to $300 million. Apple has to share that with exhibitors, and distribution and marketing costs for the movie are believe to be around $50 million. This all means that “F1” will need to make at least $635 million to show a profit.
Since Apple owns the film, it’s making another good bit of income from the film’s on-demand release, followed by availability on Apple TV+, where it could attract additional subscribers to the streaming service.
The movie’s soundtrack, “F1: The Album,” has also performed well, with several tracks making appearances on Billboard’s Top Movie Songs chart.
