Meta’s Threads Now Allows Long-Form Posts Offering Support for Formatted Text

Users on Meta’s Threads short blogging service can now write longer posts than the 500 characters per post they were previously allowed to, via “text attachments.”

TechCrunch last week reported that Threads was “testing a new feature that makes it easy to share long-form text on the social network.” That the new feature is now available to Threads users.

The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu, and allows iOS users to publish posts longer than the 500 character limit, by attaching a formatted block of text to the post, which can include formatted text, like bold, italics, and other formatting, instead of just plain text.

The attached text appears in a gray box, which can be expanded with the tap or click of a “Read more” button. Currently, the feature doesn’t support embedded media or links, although developers are reportedly working on that.

A Meta Newsroom posty confirms that there is a 10,000 character limit to attachments. The post also confirmed that users can also include a link to content on other social platforms at the end of the attached text:

“Any attached text can be read directly in Threads to help you convey more complex perspectives, draw your audience in, and promote your work. If you’re sharing or previewing content from other platforms on Threads, you can include a link to the full content in the body of your main post.”

The new expanded post feature is not an added feature for paid users, like a similar feature on X is.

A Threads post by user Robert P. Nickson shows how the feature works.

Threads is a competitor to Elon Musk’s X short messaging service.
