Reports from Bloomberg and French blog Consomac indicate that two of the available colors for Apple’s new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Air models scratch more easily than other colors. Apparently, some of the new iPhones on display in Apple Stores are showing scratches and scuffs.
The scratches are appearing on models with darker finishes, like the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max in Deep Blue, and the iPhone Air in Space Black. As this is the first day for the new iPhone 17 lineup to be on display in stores, it isn’t clear just how common the scratching and scuffing is in all Apple Stores.
The iPhone 17 Pro models sport an aluminum unibody, with a glassy Ceramic Shield area on the back of the devices, a change from the iPhone 16 Pro’s titanium frame with a glass back. As titanium and glass are stronger and harder than aluminum, that could be the reason that iPhone 17 Pro models are seemingly more prone to scratching.
Meanwhile the iPhone Air, has a titanium frame with a glass-like Ceramic Shield back, although the reports say scratches are still visible on the device’s Space Black finish.
It should be noted that customers flocking to the Apple Store to check out the new iPhones are pretty rough on the display models, putting them through more torture than they would their own devices. (But it’s a great reminder why a case is a good purchase.
