New Apple TV Series ‘The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina’ Explores Contemporary Asian American Cuisine

Apple TV has announced a new eight-episode unscripted food-centric series “The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina,” starring award-winning comedian, writer and actor Nora Lum. Lum, who is perhaps better known to most as Awkwafina (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “ Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens”) also executive produces the series.

The series follows Lum as she travels cross-country to explore contemporary Asian American cuisine, a familiar subject, as she was raised around a Cantonese restaurant ran by her family. As Lum travels around the US, she uses cooking and travel to connect to the culture that shaped her childhood memories.

As the series kicks off, she visits her family’s Flushing, New York Cantonese restaurant, Lum’s. Despite growing up around the family business, Lum says she burns instant ramen.

“I’ve never been trusted around a kitchen, so I thank everyone involved for opening that part of my house up to me,” said Awkwafina. “Food has been a huge part of my family’s history, and to be able to explore and reconnect with that legacy has been an incredibly rare and very special opportunity.”

Part of Lum’s attempts to connect with her family’s restaurant legacy include attempting to learn the skills she failed to in her younger days.

As Lum explores the traditions that her family legacy is built upon, interacting with restaurant owners, chefs, and her relatives.

“The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina” is produced for Apple TV by Twofour and is executive produced by Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss and Caroline Davies.
