Morgan Stanley researchers say Apple’s 2028 iPhone lineup will boast 200MP cameras from Samsung. The investment bank also says Apple will be adding suppliers to keep costs in check.
That prediction comes in a note to investors by Morgan Stanley, shared by AppleInsider. That means it will be the iPhone 21 that first gains a 200MP camera.
Apple’s efforts to diversify its supply chain is partly due to the company’s desire to not be reliant on a single source. Apple is also likely looking to increase the number of iPhone components manufactured in the United States, thanks to pressure from the Trump administration. Previously, there have been reports that Samsung will open a plant in Austin, Texas to make CMOS image sensors for the iPhone.
Sony is currently also a supplier of LiDAR sensors for the iPhone, and Morgan Stanley says that Apple is also talking with STMicro as a further supplier.
The firm’s researchers do not expect a change in the supply chain for the Face ID sensors. Those are currently made by a single supplier, LITE, and Apple is expected to continue to use that supplier.
Morgan Stanley also predicts changes are on the way for Face ID, saying under-display Face ID may be ready for prime time in 2027, on the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone.
