iFixit AirTag 2 Teardown – What’s New Inside

iFixit has released its AirTag 2 teardown video where it opens one up and gives us all a peek at the changes inside Apple’s second-generation tracking tag.

Highlights include a redesigned speaker that is up to 50% louder than the one included in the first-gen AirTag, according to Apple. We also get a peek at the accessory’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip and more.

The overall design of the AirTag 2 hasn’t changed much from the original version of the tracking accessory.

While we already know that Apple made it more difficult to remove the speaker in the AirTag 2, compared to the one in the original AirTag (in an effort to ensure privacy), iFixit still figured out a way to disable the speaker’s audible chime with the judicious use of a soldering gun.

As you may already know, the AirTag is a small tracker tag that can be hidden in or attached to just about anything you fear losing, such as your backpack, purse, keys, or child. The AirTag allows users to track the location of the attached item in the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. Users of other computers or devices can use iCloud.com to track items.

Apple last week released its second-generation AirTag, which offers improved Bluetooth tracking range, more precise precision finding, and a louder speaker.

The new AirTag has a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, improving the Precision Finding feature to work up to 50% farther away than the OG AirTag. An upgraded Bluetooth chip offers improved overall range outside of the Precision Finding mode.
