Apple Confirms the Mac Pro’s Nearly 20 Year Run Is at an End

Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro and has removed the machine from its website, reports 9to5Mac. Apple says it will not design a new version of the Mac Pro and will not release a new model in the future.

The Mac Pro, which first hit shelves in 2006, was last updated in 2023, when Apple added an M2 Ultra Apple Silicon chip to the computer. The chassis of the Mac Pro has not seen a refresh since 2019, when it redesigned it after being heavily criticized for its “trashcan” Mac Pro. The Mac Pro’s $6,999 starting price has prevented the computer from being widely popular.

Apple’s Mac Studio – which is currently powered by an M3 Ultra chip and is expected to get an M5 Ultra later this year – is not the top-end professional desktop machine in the Mac lineup.

The Mac Pro basically started its downhill slide back in 2013, when Apple unveiled a new cylindrical design that did not include PCIe expansion slots for graphics cards and other hardware, with all expansion being handled through Thunderbolt 2 ports, leaving users unable to upgrade graphic cards and other components to the machine,

Apple waited until 2019 to unveil the current ‌Apple Silicon-powered model Mac Pro‌, which sports a more standard tower design and offers eight PCIe slots.
