Apple’s much-rumored MacBook Pro will be “touch-friendly,” not “touch-first,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
Gurman’s comments came in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. Gurman said the new MacBook Pro is coming soon, debuting by the end of 2026. He also said Apple is taking a conservative approach to touch-based input on the MacBook Pro:
Before anyone gets too excited, the touch-based MacBook Pro will not feel like an iPad. As I wrote this past week, Apple is being very deliberate about this with the product’s development and marketing. The Mac will be a touch-friendly device, rather than one that’s touch-first. With changes to macOS — set up in part by last year’s Liquid Glass overhaul — users will be able to easily move between touch-based and point-and-click inputs. Moreover, the MacBook Pro will continue to have its full keyboard, trackpad and current industrial design, making it far from a hybrid. This is the MacBook Pro you’ve known for the past two decades — with touch offered as a bonus. The point-and-click interface will remain at the forefront, and touch will be completely optional.
Users will be able to tap or click on-screen elements, and controls will change based on the method of input. Touch-based options will also be available throughout macOS, supporting iPad features like pinch gestures and fast scrolling.
The touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to be powered by the M6 chip and is expected to sport an OLED display. The redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are also expected to have a hole-punch camera, housed in an iPhone-style Dynamic Island.
