Apple today hiked the prices of several of its products, and the list includes the popular MacBook Neo, which now carries a base price of $699 in the United States.
The price increase of the MacBook Neo, and that of several other Apple devices, are do the rising cost of components, led by the ongoing memory chip shortage, which has led to skyrocketing prices for the RAM Apple uses in its devices, the MacBook Neo included. The ever-increasing price of RAM is fueled by giants like Nvidia and OpenAI buying up huge amounts of memory chips for their AI servers.
“We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly,” Apple told The Wall Street Journal.
The MacBook Neo, when it debuted in March, started at a base price of $599 in the U.S. which bought you 256GB of storage, that model of the popular and colorful laptop received a $100 price increase. Meanwhile, the higher-priced Neo, with 512GB of storage and a Touch ID button also received a $100 price increase and now starts at $799.
Apple’s education store customers were also hit with the increase, with the MacBook Neo now starting at $599 for college students in the U.S., up from $499. The 512GB/Touch ID model now goes for $699, up from $599.
Other countries around the world aren’t being left out of the price hike fun, although the exact price changes can vary based on local currencies.
