Apple Said to be Readying New iPad Mini With OLED Display for October Release

Apple Said to be Readying New iPad Mini With OLED Display for October Release

Apple will release a new iPad mini model sporting an OLED display by October of this year, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

The updated model, code-named J510, will feature an OLED screen for the first time, according to people with knowledge of the matter. That technology — short for organic light-emitting diode — provides the kind of higher-quality visuals found on the iPhone since 2017 and the iPad Pro since 2024.

OLED display panels provide better image quality compared to LCD displays. OLED displays provide more vivid colors, higher contrast ratio, and wider viewing angles, and in many cases can be more power efficient. Since OLED panels individually control each pixel, resulting in more precise color reproduction and deeper blacks compared to LCD.

OLED displays are generally more expensive than LCDs, meaning it’s a good bet that the next iPad mini wll have a higher starting price compared to the current LCD model.

The current ‌model launched in October 2024, with the A17 Pro chip enabling Apple Intelligence.

Earlier this week, leaker “yeux1122” on the Korean Naver blog wrote Apple will use a 60Hz 8.4-inch display panel in its upcoming OLED iPad mini, set for a release later this year. The leaker claims a source in Apple’s supply chain said that the unreleased iPad mini is equipped with a low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) backplane hybrid OLED panel running at 60Hz.

Gurman did not provide any other details about the next iPad mini, but he has previously reported that the device would receive a vibration-based speaker system and increased water resistance. The next iPad mini is also rumored to be powered by either an A19 Pro or A20 chip.
