iPhone 18 Pro Chip Leak Hints at Major Improvements in Two Areas

An alleged A20 Pro chip solder joint diagram indicates the new processor will boast significant improvements to the GPU and memory bandwidth. The improvements reportedly include a seven-core GPU, a wider memory interface, and a larger L2 cache for its efficiency cores.

These claims come from Weibo user “White rice fried white rice” who says the layout was reverse-engineered from its solder positions. This method allows the leaker to identify different aspects of the chip and make assumptions based on what they see. The post claims the outline indicates a two and four core CPU configuration and a seven core GPU, the top of the die houses the GPU and the CPU occupying the center.

The leaker expects the A20 Pro’s efficiency cores to share an 8MB L2 cache, up from 6MB on the A19 Pro. Meanwhile, the performance cores will retain their existing 16MB L2 cache.

As for the GPU, the seven core configuration would be an increase from the six cores found on the A19 Pro, a jump of roughly 16%. The leak also indicates there will be a 96-bit memory interface used for LPDDR5x RAM, up from the 64-bit interface on the A19 Pro. The 50% increase that would be a nice boost in memory bandwidth.

The A20 Pro is expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, to be unveiled next week. It is also possible that it will power Apple’s first foldable iPhone, referred to by many as the “iPhone Ultra.”
