Leaked Code Indicates Apple Is Still Developing an M4 Ultra Mac Pro

Leaked Code Indicates Apple Is Still Developing an M4 Ultra Mac Pro

New leaked code from Apple suggests the Cupertino firm is still working on a new M4 Ultra-powered Mac Pro. If the new Mac Pro is released, it would be the first Mac to be powered by an M4 Ultra chip.

Currently, the top-end desktop Mac is powered by an M2 Ultra chip,as it has since 2023. While still powerful, the M2 Ultra has been around for quite a while in processor years. The M2 Ultra has a 24-core CPU, a 60-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine.

Now, code discovered by Macworld suggest Apple is planning a new M4 Ultra version of the machine. The new Mac Pro has an internal identifier of t8152. Bloomberg previously reported that an M4 Ultra — codenamed Hidra — would benefit from an increase its Unified Memory capacity, providing support for up to half a terabyte.

It is uncertain how many CPU and GPU cores the M4 Ultra Pro may have.

Keep in mind that simply because code indicates an M4 Ultra-powered Mac Pro is on the way, it doesn’t guarantee that the pro-level computer will ever make it to stores. Apple tests its device in multiple configurations. This can lead to bits and pieces of code being left behind from testing, meaning not all tested devices makes it onto store shelves.

There is a possibility that a new Mac Pro could use a chip from the upcoming M5 family of processors. The next-generation processors are expected to be released in the near future, as the iOS 18 codebase includes M5 chip identifiers.
