AirTag Crime Blotter

As originally reported by AppleInsider, several AirTag-related crimes have been logged recently.

Estranged Husband Stalks Woman Using AirTags

An Illinois man was arrested in late October, for using multiple AirTags to stalk his estranged wife. A woman discovered multiple AirTags were being used to track her location. The AirTags were hidden in her purse, as well as two spots inside her vehicle. An unnamed 63 year old Alton man was arrested and charged with aggravated stalking.

The AirTags were placed in violation of a protection order originally filed in September and extended twice during October.

All three devices that were found by the woman were connected to the defendant’s iCloud accounts and phone number.

The suspect remains in jail.

AirTag Leads Cops to Chop Shop

5 NBC DFW reports that ia Dallas woman, Maria Pena, had her truck stolen from her apartment complex’s parking lot in late October. The woman, who had hidden an AirTag in the vehicle and tracked it to a “Chop Shop” where stolen vehicles are parted out. The discovery not only led police to the woman’s truck, but also facilitated the recovery of several other stolen vehicles.

Four men were arrested on felony theft charges, while a fifth man was arrested on unrelated charges.

Pena said this was not the first time her vehicle had been stolen and after a previous theft, she hid an AirTag inside the truck.

“It works, it really does,” she said. “It doesn’t update 100 percent on the spot, but eventually it will update.”

Pena contacted Dallas police and told them about the stolen vehicle and the AirTag. Police then surveilled the area, spotting her truck in a backyard. Unfortunately, her truck had already been stripped, although a trailer that had been attached to the truck was recovered.
