Five Charged After Chinese Teen Swaps His Kidney For An iPad

Following a report last year that a Chinese teen sold his kidney to buy an iPhone, iPad, and laptop, Reuters reports that the young man now suffers from renal deficiency, and five people are being charged with “unintentional” injury as a result.

Among the five men being charged are the surgeon who removed the kidney, and the individual who arranged the transplant (and made around $35,000 in the process). The teen, who is referred to in the report as Wang, only received about $3200 (USD equivalent) through the transaction.

Organs are in extremely high demand in China, and the price of Apple products in China is inflated, partially due to scalpers purchasing mass amounts of Apple merchandise and selling it for a profit.

Apple products are great. I own a number of them. But I can’t help but worry that this is what it’s come to – teens selling their organs and auctioning off their virginity just to get their hands on Apple’s latest and greatest. And even worse – adult human beings are allowing this to happen, and even facilitating it!

What has this world come to?
