Re/code reports that Major League Baseball that iBeacons are ready to go in the home stadiums of the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The low-power Bluetooth transmitters will be used to send location-specific alerts within ballparks to users of MLB’s At The Ballpark app.

The installation of 65 iBeacons at Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego’s Petco Park, home of the Padres, will be followed by similar work at more than a dozen and a half other MLB stadiums, the league said. The plan is to have more than 20 ballparks in total equipped with the technology by Opening Day in late March.
MLB hasn’t as yet supplied details as to what types of alerts the fans will receive from the iBeacon devices, but possibilities include discounts, assisting fans in finding their assigned seats, and more. The league says it will offer more details about this next month.
