1234 Is The Most Popular iPhone Passcode. Go Figure!

Daniel Amitay, creator of the iPhone security app Big Brother Security Camera, has revealed that the most common iPhone passcode is probably, wait for it….., 1234.

Amitay added a feature in his app that would anonymously capture the passcode of users that accessed his app. Amitay assumed that the passcode users used for his app would match the passcode they use for their iPhone. In total Amitay collected 204,508 passcodes.

Of the 204,508 passcodes a total of 8,884 use the combination 1234. That figure means that approximately 4.3% of users are using the most simplistic and obvious security code to keep their iPhone “secure”. The second, third, and forth most common passcodes don’t come as a shock either with 0000, 2580, and 1111 bringing up the rear.

Amitay explains that…

Most of the top passcodes follow typical formulas, such as four identical digits, moving in a line up/down the pad, repetition. 5683 is the passcode with the least obvious pattern, but it turns out that it is the number representation of LOVE (5683), once again mimicking a very common internet password: “iloveyou.”

On a side note, it’s a bit ironic that an iPhone security app developer has released figures about the iPhone’s passcode, albeit a security app for your camera. But if you’re using 1234 or any other simple code then you only have yourself to blame if you lose personal data.

If you are concerned about the security of your iPhone, you can enable an “Erase Data” option within Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Enabling this feature will wipe all data from your iPhone after 10 failed passcode attempts.
