Apple Preparing 65 Million iPad 3s for Initial Retail Sales?

Apple’s forthcoming iPad 3 is widely expected to be announced on March 7th, and is extremely likely to feature a high-resolution Retina display. And according to China Times (via 9to5Mac), Apple ordered a whopping 65 million iPad 3 Retina displays for their initial supply of the tablets, building up a strong stock for launch day and initial sales.

Interestingly, China Times suggests that the displays were ordered from LG and Samsung, and not Sharp, as many previous rumors have suggested, and as leaked pictures have shown.

65 million units is a pretty huge number. Hopefully this will help Apple prevent shortages such as those that occurred with last year’s iPad 2 launch, with many customers having to wait weeks to get their hands on the device. Apple ordered 40 million displays ahead of the iPad 2 launch.
