Apple’s 2025 Swift Student Challenge has begun, allowing students around the globe a chance to showcase their coding skills and creativity by developing app concepts using Swift Playgrounds or Xcode. Apple says the contest provides students the opportunity to learn real-world skills that can be used in their future careers.
Apple announced the challenge would be held this month back in October 2024, so students have had plenty of time to think about and develop their apps. Students must create an app concept, with Apple providing Develop in Swift tutorials to help students learn the foundations of coding.
Apple has also hosted an online session designed to provide students and educators with more information on participating in the Swift Student Challenge. The session explored the elements of great apps with an Apple engineer, provided tips from a former Challenge winner, and offered inspiration for app playgrounds. Apple has also updated Develop in Swift Tutorials to help students learn the foundations of coding.
Apple said it will select 350 winners whose submissions “demonstrate excellence in innovation, creativity, social impact, or inclusivity.” From that group of 350, Apple will name 50 Distinguished Winners and invite them to visit Apple in Cupertino for three days. All winners will also receive one year of membership in the Apple Developer Program, a gift from Apple, and more.
The trip generally coincides with Apple’s annual WWDC event, which is often held in June.
Submissions are now open, and will remain open for a three-week period before judging begins. Students can learn more by visiting Apple’s developer website.
