Apple Developing Vision Pro Support for Godot Game Engine

Apple Developing Vision Pro Support for Godot Game Engine

Apple engineers want to add Vision Pro support to the free, open-source Godot game engine, which is an increasingly-popular competitor to the Unreal and Unity game engines.

The cross-platform Godot offers support for computers, mobile devices, and more. At the moment, the engine does not offer support forĀ  running Godot-fdeveloped gamers on the Apple Vision Pro. However, Apple’s visionOS engineering team is now offering support to allow Godot games to run natively on Apple’s AR/VR headset, reports MacRumors.

On GitHub, visionOS engineering team member Ricardo Sanchez-Saez said that Apple wants to contribute by developing a visionOS VR plugin. Apple engineers are currently contributing to the project, and Sanchez-Saez says development will continue after getting community feedback and suggestions. The developer community is being asked to provide guidance, or to help testing functionality.

The Apple Vision Pro’s sales haven’t exactly been impressive, and many potential customers have likely been turned off by the Vision Pro’s lack of immersive games, as well as its expensive prive of entry.

By making it possible to develop Godot-based games for the Vision Pro, Apple hopes it will encourage them to provide native Vision Pro support for their games, resparking interest and driving more sales.
