Apple’s next-generation budget-priced iPhone, the iPhone 17e, is nearing the trial production stage. Apple is preparing for a late May 2026 release for the handset, says a generally-accurate industry leaker.
WeChat-based leaker Fixed Focus Digital who has sources in Apple’s Chinese supply chain, posted the claims on Tuesday. The leaker says the iPhone 17e release date is tentatively scheduled for late May 2026, although the exact date is unconfirmed.
The leaker also indicated that the iPhone 17e will be positioned to compete head-to-head with another mid-range device from a rival smartphone maker that generally releases new models around the same time of year.
The iPhone 17e will be the replacement for the current budget-priced iPhone 16e model, which boasts a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, a USB-C port, and an A18 chip.
A February report by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) said Apple was expected to release an iPhone 17e next year, but the report indicated there would be another February launch for the device.
Apple’s mid-cycle release of the iPhone 16e benefited Apple, generating consumer interest in the device, and helping it take the top spot in global market sales during the first quarter of 2025 with 19% of global sales. That marked the first time Apple has been in the top spot during a first quarter. The results may lead Apple to continue a mid-cycle release strategy for its budget handsets, including the upcoming iPhone 17e.
