Apple Wallet offers support for dedicated transit cards in several large U.S. cities, including the TAP card in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Clipper card, Canada’s PRESTO card, and several othe rlarge cities. Now, New York City’s tap-to-pay OMNY card will offer Apple Wallet integration, the MTA has announced.
… This is a multi-year design-build program being designed with open architecture, and it will be an account-based system that accepts open payments made with contactless credit and debit bank cards, as well as digital wallets in smartphones and watches (known as open loop media) at transit pointof-entry gates.
The New York City transit system has slowly been replacing its swipe-to-pay MetroCard system with a new tap-to-pay system, called OMNY. The system originally only supported debit or credit card. with tap-to-pay, as well as offering support for express transit in Apple Wallet.
The MTA is now ready to fully eliminate the MetroCard over the next year or so, so it is important to provide a reliable and easy way to pay a subway fare.
This is where Apple Wallet comes in.
The MTA will roll out a mobile virtual OMNY card for commuters during the fourth quarter of 2025, which offers integrated management of a rider’s OMNY card within the MTA app. Both are expected to be available by December 2025.
This will allow commuters to add an OMNY card to the Apple Wallet on the iPhone or Google Wallet on Android phones in the coming months.
