Apple has acquired “Sneaky Sasquatch” game studio RAC7, according to a report from Digital Trends. RAC7 is a small, two-person development studio that developed popular Apple Arcade game Sneaky Sasquatch. The purchase has been confirmed by an Apple spokesperson.
“We love Sneaky Sasquatch and are excited that the 2-person RAC7 team has joined Apple to continue their work on it with us,” an Apple spokesperson tells Digital Trends. “We will continue to deliver a great experience for Apple Arcade players with hundreds of games from many of the best game developers in the world.”
The duo’s previous games include indie titles Dark Echo and Splitter Critters. The pair released Sneaky Sasquatch as an Apple Arcade exclusive in 2019 and the adventure game was among the service’s 71 launch titles, proving to be a breakout title for the gaming subscription service. The games has received regular updates since launch.
RAC7 will become an internal game studio within Apple, and Apple purchased the company to help Sneaky Sasquatch continue to grow on Apple Arcade.
While Apple has long worked with developers and game companies to create titles for Apple Arcade, but this is the Cupertino-based company’s first game studio acquisition.
When I spoke to Apple Arcade Senior Director Alex Rofman about the service last year, he cited Sneaky Sasquatch as one of the service’s major success stories (“We hear from customers all over the world whose kids want Sneaky Sasquatch birthday parties!” Rofman told Digital Trends at the time). RAC7 is just one of a handful of indie studios who has consistently developed for the service since its launch alongside names like Lykke Studios and Triband Games.
Apple Arcade is Apple’s subscription-based gaming service and it is available for $6.99 (U.S.) per month with a one-month free trial. Customers who purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV receive three months of Apple Arcade for free.
