Review: Rhinoshield AirX – The Ultra-Protective Case for Your iPhone 17 Pro Max

Pop quiz, hotshot: You’ve spent more than $1,100 for your iPhone 17 Pro Max, and it could be damaged by a single drop onto a hard surface. What do you do? What do you do?

While I can understand how many users don’t like using a case on their new iPhone, think about what can happen if you drop it, or the kind of wear and tear you’ll see on your iPhone’s finish from daily use. By using a case, you’ll protect your precious from drops, while also protecting it from scratches and scars from your surrounding environment.

I recently bought a new iPhone 17 Pro Max and soon after was given the opportunity to review a new case from Rhinoshield called the AirX. Here are my thought on the case after using it to protect my iPhone for the last month or so.

Why Should I Consider the Rhinoshield AirX?

Before I share my review, let’s take a look at the features of the Rhinoshield AirX. According to Rhinoshield, the AirX does the following to protect your iPhone 17 Pro Max (as well as other recent iPhone models and Samsung devices):

  • Precision Impact Control: The AirX structure redirects shock away from the iPhone 17’s rigid battery tray, helping preserve internal alignment and structural integrity during drops.
  • Thermal + Structural Defense: Built to complement the phone’s new vapor-chamber cooling system, AirX minimizes chassis flex and supports thermal stability under stress.
  • Camera + Logic Board Protection: A reinforced central frame and raised-lip design shield the reoriented logic board and updated camera system from torsion and impact.
  • Slim, Sustainable Strength: Crafted with RHINOSHIELD’s eco-engineered ShockSpread™ ECO material, AirX delivers military-grade protection in a lighter, slimmer, and more sustainable form.
  • Everyday Compatibility: Fully MagSafe-ready, wireless-charging compatible, and made with BPA/BPS/BPF-free, FDA-grade materials.

As you can see, while many case manufacturers seem to concentrate on external damage to your iPhone – preventing dents, dings and scratches, while also offering protection against screen damage from falls – Rhinoshield also designed the AirX with the intention of keeping the internal components protected from those same falls.

My Experience With the Rhinoshield AirX

Since I don’t have any fancy equipment to test the impact of dropping my iPhone, I will simply share with you my day-to-day experience of using the AirX on my iPhone 17 Pro Max over the last month. That said, I have seen reports about Rhinoshield’s testing methods, and they are impressive. The company says an impact that would normally provide a 4,000G impact was reduced to just 775G. The case was also reportedly put through 24,000+ tumble tests without experiencing a crack. Quite impressive.

First of all, the AirX is easy to install. Like most iPhone cases, the case is a single piece design, and it proved to be easy to put on my iPhone, taking only a little bit of effort to get the iPhone to fit snugly in the case. While it took a bit more effort to get the case on my iPhone than I’ve experienced with other cases, the reason for that is due to the protective BPA/BPS/BPF-free, FDA-grade materials the case is made from.

The case provides excellent protection against damage from dropping it or knocking it off a table, and I am impressed by how the case provides top-notch protection against damage, especially on the corners. The case appears to provide more protection against corner and edge damage than other cases I have used. (And since I’ve had an iPhone since the OG iPhone, I’ve went through quite a few cases over the years.)

The AirX protects my iPhone from all sides and the back, while also offering some protection from screen damage from drops. (For more protection, you can use a screen protector, like Rhinoshield’s offering, which I will soon be reviewing.) Rhinoshield says it uses “wraparound air cushioning” to protect your iPhone, providing airbag-like protection for your device. From my usage of the case, I can testify to its cushiony protection, which, although a bit stiff, offers a much more grippable surface than other cases, while not making the iPhone overly bulky, which can lead to inadvertent drop tests with my fumbly paws.

The AirX offers protection for all of the buttons on your iPhone. While it does take a bit more force to press the buttons with the case on, I didn’t need to apply an excessive amount of force to press the buttons, and I soon became used to using the buttons with the case on.

As for protecting the all-important camera array on the backside of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the case is designed to provide a margin of protection, preventing the lenses from damage in case of a fall or from sliding across hard surfaces, like concrete floors. (You know who you are.)

Okay, How Much Does All of This Protection Cost?

Admittedly, this level of iPhone protection doesn’t come cheap. At US $62.99 MSRP, your first thought will likely be “Why, I could buy five cases for that price!” Absolutely, but you’ll also use all five of those cases over your iPhone’s lifetime, and they still won’t provide the protection a single Rhinoshield AirX provides. (This is where I disclose that Rhinoshield kindly provided the AirX for this review, but it did not compensate me in any other way for the review.)

My Verdict

I have to say that I am absolutely satisfied by the protection offered by the Rhinoshield AirX. The case has protected my iPhone 17 Pro Max from several drops and has kept it scratch and dent free, even when it has landed on a corner. (I put a dent in my OG iPhone years ago, when I dropped it without a case and it landed on the power button corner, denting it and putting my iPhone in a reboot loop, so I know if which I speak.)

Sure, I didn’t pay for mine, but the case is a solid value, and 63 bucks is a small price to pay to keep my $1,1000 precious safe and sound.

I give the Rhinoshield AirX a solid 4 ½ stars out of 5.

Pros

  • Provides excellent protection for your iPhone.
  • Provides top-notch protection without being overly bulky.
  • Goes on and comes off easily, but it stays put once it’s on.
  • Provides protection for all sides of the iPhone, including all of the buttons.

Cons

  • It’s not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
  • I wish it was available in more colors.
  • USB-C charging cable with a 90 degree angled connector might not work.
