New Mac-Like Recovery Mode Available in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27

A new Mac-like recovery mode is available in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, allowing users to boot their device into a lightweight interface that offers five options.

The X post shows the interface:

To use the feature, power down your device, then hold the side button to power it on and keep holding the button. You’ll see the Apple logo appear just as it does during a normal boot, but by holding down on the power button, you’ll see progress messages informing you of what’s happening, with the device eventually loading a new recovery environment in place of the normal iOS or iPadOS environment. This is similar to how recovery mode is entered on Apple Silicon Macs.

The new recovery screen offers five options:

  • Recovery Assistant
  • Software Update
  • Diagnostics Mode
  • Erase All Content and Settings
  • Recovery Mode.

The interface also displays the device’s current battery percentage in the corner of the screen and automatically connects to a known WiFi network. A power button in the toolbar allows users to attempt a normal restart of the device.

Apple’s Recovery Assistant tool is designed to automated some last ditch fixes repairs that previously required connecting an iPhone or ‌iPad‌ to a computer can now be performed on the device itself.

This new recovery mode should only be used if a software update fails to load properly, possibly allowing a user to reinstall the last stable version of the OS without putting the device into DFU mode to be restored from a Mac or PC.

The iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 betas are currently only available to developers, although a public beta is expected to be made available to public beta testers in July. A wide public release is expected for September.
