In 2024, Amanda began receiving alerts from her Apple Watch about an abnormal heart rate. There had been changes to her resting heart rate and her overnight vitals. The alert spurred her to visit her doctor.
She ended up being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, which is an aggressive cancer. Thanks to prompt treatment, she is currently in remission.
“I absolutely believe that if it wasn’t for my Apple Watch, I wouldn’t be talking to you,” she said.
The Apple Watch regularly monitors the wearer’s heart rate, sending alerts when a high heart rate is detected during rest. The Watch can also detect low heart rates and irregular heart rhythms, while the Apple Watch’s ECG app can detect atrial fibrillation.
